一九五四年十月一日，以法屬阿爾及利亞首都阿爾及耳的卡斯巴為中心，爆發了阿爾及利亞人反抗運動。這是由於阿拉伯人憎恨法國人長期統治而引起的。人們四處搞破壞，法國政府發覺事態嚴重，便於一九五七年十月七日，派馬丘將軍率領四十萬大軍駐於斯拉姆地區，但是暴亂仍層出不窮，法國人的鎮壓行動已明顯升級。阿里．拉波安原只是一個以扒竊為生的小偷，由於他的果敢和身體力行，而同時與賓米提成為阿爾及利亞獨立運動的領導者。某日，阿里男扮女裝上街，最終還是被發現，他們跟蹤他並突襲了基地，阿里等被處死。但阿爾及利亞的人民鬥爭情...
